Despite working in the ski industry, being Mikaela Shiffrin\u2019s point of contact at Ikon Pass, and being raised by an ex-ski racer, I, unfortunately, know very little about ski racing\u2014and I\u2019m actually a snowboarder! Of course, I visited Tremblant to see Mikaela race and rub elbows with the world\u2019s greatest athletes. But I also came for the festive atmosphere Tremblant creates during events, the French cuisine, the picturesque village decked out for the holidays, the possibility of a reunion with my Vermont-based brother, the proximity to both Montreal and Quebec City, and the opportunity to snowboard at a new destination. So, really, I went to Tremblant last December to watch ski races\u2014and so much more.<\/p>\n

“I flew directly from Denver, Colorado, to Montreal, Quebec, rented a car, and drove to Tremblant, where I promptly parked it under the hotel and didn\u2019t touch it for the next three days.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As someone who also lives in a ski town (Winter Park, Colorado), I always look for proximity to adventure when planning trips. Tremblant has perfected the concept of a walkable resort experience\u2014everything from the hotel to the village, restaurants, and slopes is just steps away.<\/p>\n

Family, Friends, and Apr\u00e8s-Ski: A Perfect Reunion<\/h3>\n

My younger brother, Jack, who was in medical school in Vermont at the time, jumped at the chance to study in a more scenic location. The next morning, he drove a couple of hours across the border to meet me for a late breakfast at La Maison de la Cr\u00eape. Afterward, we headed back to the hotel so he could take a practice exam before gearing up and meeting me at the gondola for mid-morning laps. \u201cThat\u2019s the benefit of the Ikon Pass<\/em>\u201d, he said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter how many laps I do\u2014it\u2019s always worth it to get out and explore somewhere new.<\/em>\u201d He makes me prouder every day, not only for how well he promotes the Ikon Pass<\/a> but also for managing to graduate medical school after doing much of his homework on ski slopes.[\/vc_column_text][vc_gallery css=”” type=”image_grid” images=”3551,3549″ image_grid_loading=”default” layout=”2″ item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”7″ load_in_animation=”none”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]After a few laps and scenic selfies from Tremblant\u2019s summit, with the lake as a backdrop, we set off to find a spot to watch Mikaela race. We spent some time in the excitement of the crowd at the finish line before hiking up the slope to the Employee Section\u2014an incredible perk Tremblant offered its staff to watch the event. The atmosphere was electric; people were in great spirits, national anthems filled the air, and everyone was cheering for the athletes. It was amazing to see so many different countries coming together to celebrate.<\/p>\n

“After working with Mikaela for years, I finally had the chance to cheer her on as she earned a bronze medal back on North American soil!”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While Mikaela recovered, we celebrated. Jack, some coworkers, and I headed to one of the most renowned apr\u00e8s-ski spots in the world\u2014Le P\u2019tit Caribou. Neon lights contrasted against the rustic wooden bars, a DJ played from inside a gondola, buckets of beers chilled on ice, and people who couldn\u2019t speak each other\u2019s languages somehow all knew the dance moves to \u201cY-M-C-A.\u201d It was everything you imagine an apr\u00e8s-ski party should be!<\/p>\n

Of course, after trying to keep up with the Quebecois lifestyle all day, we needed some rest and relaxation. Since the hotel was just steps away, we grabbed some cheese and crackers from the village market and settled in by the fireplace in the hotel room. When dinner rolled around, it was time for another reunion.<\/p>\n

One of my father\u2019s best friends from college, Charles \u201cBarnesy\u201d Darwin Jr. (yes, a descendant of that Charles Darwin), is married to Mikaela Shiffrin\u2019s mother\u2019s best friend. We celebrated our extended family reunion over a glass of wine and then joined a larger group to share several poutines before dinner.<\/p>\n

“At the Coupe du monde Tremblant, it felt like professional skiers and their families were everywhere, and you were bound to know someone who knew someone.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This year, I\u2019ve already convinced both of my parents to join the Coupe du monde and our Tremblant ski weekend reunion from their home in Maine. They won\u2019t let Barnsey, Jack, and me have all the fun for a second year in a row. Plus, Mikaela Shiffrin is on track to make history early in the World Cup again\u2014this time, with her eyes on her 100th gold medal!<\/p>\n
